Playspace Programs Manager

Overview
The Playspace Programs Manager will work in the Playspace Programs Greater Boston Region serving children living in family shelters.  The Playspace Programs creates Playspaces in family shelters so that the children can have a place to get the stimulation and education that occurs naturally through play.  The Playspace Programs recruits, trains, places and supervises volunteers known as Playspace Activity Leaders (PALs) in family shelters to play and interact with the children living there.  The Playspace Programs Manager will be responsible for managing all aspects of the Greater Boston Region volunteer program at an assigned number of shelters.

Specific Responsibilities:

Playspace Volunteer Network Management

  • Supervise and communicate with PALs on a regular basis including site visits ad community meetings
  • Strengthen relationships with PALs through regular communication and appreciation activities to help foster volunteer retention
  • Implement the placement process for all newly trained PALs

Shelter Network Management

  • Maintain excellent and collaborative relationships with shelter staff
  • Orient new Shelter Liaisons to the Playspace Programs
  • Communicate regularly with Shelter Liaisons and PALs to meet program needs, to ensure that PAL shifts are adequately staffed and safe ratios are maintained
  • Prepare and distribute all pertinent information for Shelter Liaisons on a regular basis
  • Assess Playspaces routinely and address any issues and/or material needs to ensure that Playspaces are safe, adequately stocked, clean and well maintained

Training and Outreach

  • Secure shelter and PAL panelists and present at volunteer training sessions
  • Organize PAL workshops, events and activities
  • Participate in the production and distribution of a quarterly Newsletter

Other Duties

  • Communicate the mission and the goals of Horizons for Homeless Children and the Playspace Programs in a professional and positive manner
  • Work within a pre-determined budget to achieve agency, program and individual goals
  • Create and update periodic reports
  • Maintain up-to-date PAL and Shelter records and databases
  • Other projects/duties as assigned

Required Skills and Competencies:

  • BA degree in related field, MA preferred
  • Three - five years related experience preferred
  • Excellent communication, problem solving, public speaking and organizational skills
  • Proficiency in using MS Office applications
  • Ability to work flexible hours
  • Able to lift 50 lbs.
  • Experience with volunteer programs and/or in early child development a plus
  • Commitment to working with "at risk" populations
  • Valid MA drivers license and use of a personal car
