- On May 18, Sue Heilman and Kelly Bovio, HHC's new Chief Policy and Advocacy Officer, represented Horizons for Homeless Children at a Department of Health and Human Services "Roundtable on Homeless Children" in Washington, DC. The roundtable included participants from the federal government, academia, national advocacy organizations and direct service agencies. It was a historic day, marking the first time the federal government convened an event of this magnitude focusing on the needs of young homeless children.
- Horizons for Homeless Children held a meeting with Dr. Jacqueline Jones, Special Advisor to the Secretary for Early Learning at the U.S. Department of Education, on May 24 at their Roxbury Headquarters. Dr. Jones toured the Edgerley Family Community Children's Center and met with Sue Heilman and Kelly Bovio to discuss federal policies affecting young homeless children. Dr. Jones was impressed with the level of expertise HHC demonstrated in meeting the needs of homeless children and their families and promised to share what she had learned with senior officials in the Obama Administration.
- The opening of a new or refurbished Playspace is not only a happy occasion for the children and families living at the shelter, but also a great opportunity to engage local elected officials. On May 11, State Senator Jennifer Flanagan took part in the ribbon-cutting ceremony for HHC's newest Playspace at the Montachusset Interfaith Hospitality Network in Leominster. This was the second time Sen. Flanagan helped to ceremoniously mark the opening of a new Playspace in her district.

October 2009 Horizons for Homeless Children has released the 2009 Bridging the Gap Report, that focuses on the large increase in the number of homeless children in Massachusetts and nationally, and on the decline in homeless children's participation in early education and care in Massachusetts due to recent policy changes and budget cuts. June 2009 On June 30th, Dr. Sherri Killins, Commissioner of the Mass. Dept. of Early Education and Care, and Associate Commisioner Alina Lopez visited HHC's Edgerley Family Community Children's Center, to tour the center, and to discuss HHC's work and homeless children's access to early education and care.
March 2009 HHC Hails President's Recognition of Child Homelessness; Calls for Action to Eliminate Child Homelessness.
December 2008 As part of our ongoing efforts to raise awareness among policymakers regarding the large number of homeless children, and to advocate for policies to improve the lives of homeless children, Horizons for Homeless Children has submitted recommendations to the Office of President-Elect Obama.
