NATIONAL HUNGER AND HOMELESSNESS
AWARENESS WEEK, NOVEMBER 15-21, 2009;

November 15, 2009: Child and family homelessness is a crisis in our community, particularly in this challenging economic climate; there are over 100,000 Massachusetts children experiencing homelessness every day, half of whom are under the age of six. Homeless children and their families are often transient, staying in shelters when they can, and even living in cars. So they're out of sight, and unfortunately, out of mind.

This week is National Hunger and Homelessness Awareness Week and Horizons for Homeless Children is urging the public to learn more about the issue of child and family homelessness and to get involved in helping break this unfortunate cycle. "It is unfathomable that the number of young homeless children has grown so high," said Sue Heilman, Executive Director, Horizons for Homeless Children. "At Horizons for Homeless Children, we are dedicated to reaching out to these vulnerable children and their families in the hope that they can return to self-sufficiency. We urgently need the help of the Massachusetts community to help us in our efforts."

Horizons for Homeless Children is looking for volunteer Playspace Activity Leaders to spend time with young homeless children in family shelters all across Massachusetts. To learn more about volunteering and/or other ways to get involved, click here or call 800.560.7702.
