Family Gives Homeless Children a Place to Play

The Lexington Minuteman
April 16, 2008

Recently, Horizons for Homeless Children, a non-profit organization dedicated to enriching the lives of homeless children in Massachusetts, rededicated a new “Playspace” (educational and recreational space) as a gift to homeless children living at the St. Ambrose Family Shelter in Dorchester, a transitional housing program that gives help and hope to families.

The re-installation of the Playspace was made possible with the generous support of Mike Krupka and Anne Kubik from Lexington, who attended the opening of the Playspace with their children and Kubik’s father, James.

“Sponsoring this Playspace is incredibly important to our family,” said Anne Kubik. “Knowing that homeless children at St. Ambrose have a Playspace to call their own and that their parents are afforded the time to focus on reaching self-sufficiency are both strong reasons behind our decision to support this program. Being a part of this experience also reminds us to be thankful for all that we have.”

The Playspace provides homeless children with a fun, safe and stimulating environment to learn, grow and play, and comes equipped with books, play equipment, and art supplies.

More than 2,000 homeless children are now served each week through this program. Horizons for Homeless Children serves an additional 175 homeless children each weekday through its three Community Children’s Centers, Boston’s only comprehensive, full-time child care centers specifically for homeless children.
